Neapolitan School, c. 1835, Mt. Vesuvius Erupting
Neapolitan School, c. 1835 Gouache on card. A very rare and original grand tour painting depicting the early 19th century eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. The painting is comprized of 9 independent views of the eruption, including tourists surveying the blue grotto. Each view is separated by a faux painted boarder. Beautiful ebonized fruitwood Biedermeier frame. Marbled backing paper. Rectangular, size 55 cms. X 69 cms. (21 3/4 inches X 27 1/4 inches). Mt. Vesuvius has captivated the spectator for hundreds of years, but never anymore than during the eruptions of 1822, 1834, and 1850, when well-off tourists travelled from all over Europe to see the volcanic activity. The frame is stylistically known as Biedermeier. This refers to a style period in Europe which affected literature, music, visual arts, and interior design. The period roughly dates between 1815 - 1848.
