These are among the most common types of Tibetan earrings worn by women. Called aylong, the large silver hoop goes through a hole in the ear lobe and the weight is often held by a supplemental thread in the hair.

We have included a photo of a Tibetan woman wearing very similar earrings. We want to credit the photo to the excellent book, "The Jewelry of Nepal" by Hannelore Gabriel. ...click for details

A viciously fanged blue Mahakala wearing a prominent crown of skulls is portrayed in this papier mache mask from Bhutan. Since it was worn in sometimes long monastery dances, the lightness of the material made the mask somewhat easier to wear.

As is the custom with Bhutanese masks it has been repainted several times, so it it probably considerably older than it looks. We are making the very conservative estimate t ...click for details

While we purchase almost all our Tibetan and Nepali items at the source in Asia, these Tibetan burl bowls were obtained locally. As a result we know less about them than most of our inventory. While they are certainly Tibetan we are unsure where they might have originated: Ladakh or Bhutan or historical Tibet. The metal appears to be silver over silver-plated copper. Both the coral and turquoise stones are real. The insides of the bowls are silver-lined. The burl is highly figured. Double ...click for details

Almost certainly a monastery piece, this censer would have been used to burn the loose incense which Tibetans obtain from fragrant vegetation such as certain kinds of evergreens. It is decorated with panels depicting a dragon, a phoenix and a snow lion. Above them along the rim are representations of the eight auspicious symbols.

For a censer it is a very petite size, standing 6-1/4 inches in height with a 4-1/2 inch ...click for details

The Tibetans never used movable type. They went directly from hand-carved wood block pages to computer fonts. This is a an example of how all their books were printed in the pre-computer age. The letters are a mirror image of how they will appear on the page.

There was an elaborate process of producing these print blocks. The wood had to be carefully selected and then put through a long process of aging b ...click for details

The mountain villages of Nepal used to be full of wonderfully carved wooden items no matter how humdrum the function. These examples of a rich material culture are slowly vanishing as fashions change and the older generations die out. Villages are no longer so isolated and slick new imports replace what once had to be produced locally by hand.

This decorative stamp is fashioned from a single block of wood. It ...click for details
