Formerly extremely common in Nepal, these red glass beads were worn by women after they were married. Clearly an imitation of the infinitely more expensive red coral, they are sometimes referred to as "Sherpa coral" though we prefer the term "red mala". This necklace is called a kanthshri. It is worn by the Rana Tharu people of western Nepal and is of white metal with probably a low silver content. It can be polished but not to the luster of pure silver. The numerous elements are hung on two cloth-covered cords and its closure is an Indian one anna coin dated 1939. A very similar necklace can be seen in The Jewelry of Nepal, p. 172.

Multiple stands of tiny seed beads were commonly worn in Nepal until recently. Now they are found only in more remote areas or among older women. These blue glass beads were obviously inspired by turquoise and were an early trade item. Including the braided ends this "mala" is 37 inches long and is made up of fourteen strands of beads.

A collection of thirty-six antique Tibetan turquoise beads simply strung on plastic thread. As strung the length of the necklace is 25 inches and the weight is 6.5 ounces. We collected these beads in Kathmandu, Nepal, where pilgrims from Tibet often bring old beads to sell to cover their expenses.
