Tibetan Buddhist Wall Hanging sixteen feet long
Long hangings like this are found through the Himalayas in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and Buddhist parts of India. They are used in the shrine rooms of smaller Buddhist gompas (monasteries). As a result they are often called "gompa thangkas". When a new one is donated to the monastery the old one sometimes finds its was onto the market. We purchased this one in Kathmandu several years ago but the seller could not tell us where the gompa was housed or even in which country.

It is especially well painted and also in very good condition. There are twelve figures with stupas decorating the sides and bottom and kirtimukti hovering over the figures at the top. Padmasambhava is the central figure and he is flanked by various deities and lamas.

The hanging is 16.5 feet long and a little over 3.5 feet high. It dates to the mid-20th century. The colors are nicely muted and the cotton cloth shows no damage.
