This necklace is called a kanthshri. It is worn by the Rana Tharu people of western Nepal and is of white metal with probably a low silver content. It can be polished but not to the luster of pure silver. The numerous elements are hung on two cloth-covered cords and its closure is an Indian one anna coin dated 1939. A very similar necklace can be seen in The Jewelry of Nepal, p. 172. |
