Traditionally worn in eastern Nepal in the area just west of Darjeeling, India, this necklace is composed of thirteen gold beads separated by four layers of red felt. This
kind of necklace is called a kantha.
Nepalese jewelers are experts on making a small amount of gold go a long way. The beads are made of resin and the gold is applied in very thin sheets. The beaded portion of the necklace is 13 inches, but the cords with the sliding bead represent an additional fifteen inches of length. |
