The mountain villages of Nepal used to be full of wonderfully
carved wooden items no matter how humdrum the function. These examples
of a rich material culture are slowly vanishing as fashions change and
the older generations die out. Villages are no longer so isolated and
slick new imports replace what once had to be produced locally by hand.
This traditional wooden wrist guard is a good example. Not only did it server a the specific function of protecting an archer's forearm from the painful return of the bowstring, but the person who produced it took great pride in making it into a beautiful object. As befits its function the guard is carved to the size of a Nepali man's small size. The wrist opening is only one inch wide and accommodates a wrist only 2-1/2 inches across. The outside width is five inches and the guard is six inches long. It was carved from a light colored wood which has darkened with age and use. Abrasion has worn off some of the patina on the front surface. Two small worm holes (inactive), three small and old chips, but no cracks. Without expensive testing let's say that it is ageless, but we will certainly argue that is at least fifty years old. |
