Tibetan gau boxes come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but
this is one of the most common form of the larger gaus. It was
made to be either placed on an altar or worn on the person. The two
lugs on either side allow for a strap so it can be easily
tied around the waist or hung over the shoulder.
A gau of this size can hold a wide variety of objects, all of a sacred or protective nature. This could include a small statue or painting of a deity, scrolls of paper prayers, seeds or grains blessed by a lama, sacred relics or tsatsas, or anything else the owner wished. This is one of a pair of similar but not identical gaus. Both are of identical sizes and shapes. The only difference between the two are the details of the very intricate design elements. The gilt copper elements are overlaid over the silver and held in place with tiny clips. We are selling the two gaus separately in that few people would necessarily need a pair of matching gaus. See our inventory number 23673a for the second gau. Dimensions: 7 inches high, 5 inches wide, and 2-14 inches deep. Conditions of each is good. Lugs on the inside of the front allow the opening to be fitted with glass. There are many reproductions of these gaus now available. The two offered here have a legitimate patina and probably date to the early twentieth century. |
