These are among the most common types of Tibetan earrings worn by women. Called aylong, the large silver hoop goes through a hole in the ear lobe and the weight is often held by a supplemental thread in the hair. We have included a photo of a Tibetan woman wearing very similar earrings. We want to credit the photo to the excellent book, "The Jewelry of Nepal" by Hannelore Gabriel. Being such a traditional design it is hard to estimate the age of these earrings. We'll say they predate the Chinese takeover of Tibet. They are also worn by women of Tibetan ethnicity across the border in Nepal. The hoops are 2-1/8 inch (5.5 cm.) in diameter. The decorative portion is 2-1/4 inches long (6 cm.) |
