One of two strings of graduated Tibetan amber beads found in the estate of a NYC Artist, Mildred Docktor, who traveled widely in Asia in the 1930-1960 period. This strand is 24" long and contains 40 Tibetan amber beads. It weighs 9 ounces.
Amber is not native to Tibet but was all imported, mostly through Russia from the Baltic. Because of its high cost it was used sparingly with a few beads added to coral and turquoise necklaces. Tibetans value amber for its protective powers against eye disease and also because they believe it attracts good luck and holds evil spirits at bay. This sting is a collection of beads, some of which may have been in circulation for hundreds of years. |
