Serving the simple function of holding the churn handle upright while butter was being made, these carved household objects from Nepal have evolved into a unique design and aesthetic with religious overtones. In fact a 461 page book has been published on the subject.
Although all the ghurras have been sold, our Trocadero item number 327665 includes a photograph of a ghurra as used in butter-making and a cover photo of the book mentioned above. We have been collecting these ghurras for many years now. They necessarily vary greatly in age and wear. Some, but not all, would date from the last century. The strongest indication of usage is how off-round the hole for the handle has worn, but some ghurras were carved simply for the sake of carving and were never put to use. The ghurra presented here is a particularly expressive one with animals on both sides and a squatting human figure on the third side. Geometric designs cover the fourth side, and a wooden milk pot tops the composition off. The ghurra is seven inches long and still holds the original hand-twined rope. |
