This is an ancient Chinese bronze piece called a zhun. It was designed to be put on the bottom end of a pole mounted weapon. This particular piece is from the famed Arthur M Sackler collection and was purchased through Christies in New York. Their tag will stay with the piece. There are stylized animal motifs on the body and the overall style and type are characteristic of weapons used in the Warring States period (ca 400 BCE). This is a red pottery idol from the Indus Valley culture and dates to circa 2500 BCE or earlier. This fantastic find is intact and shows no signs of repair or restoration but has a few chips, especially on the reverse where it appears as though there was originally some sort of suspension loop that is now missing. It weighs roughly 86 grams and measures 8.6 cm in height.

This is a very early, copper alloy, dagger axe (ge) from ancient China. The style indicates that it could be as early as the Shang Dynasty (circa 1100 bc). This is a bronze, socketed axe or spade from ancient China. Pieces such as this one are generally attributed to the Shang Dynasty (1700 BC—1100 BC).
The piece is shaped like a wedge when viewed from the side, which would make in an ideal cutting tool. The heavy, flat blade with rounded edges extends from the socket laterally. The blade is slightly wider near distal edge than at the “shoulders”.
