This week I am posting several Bronze Age weapons from the Middle East including a set of 5, very unique, crescent-hilt daggers from the Marlik culture (circa 1000 BC). These all came from the same private collection. For information on similar types see "Arms and Armor from Iran" by Manoucher Khorasani pp 59 and 71. The unique attribute of this piece is that on most examples, the penannular or crescent guard is solid whereas on this piece it is flanged to hold an inlay of some mater ...click for details

This is a beautiful bronze dagger from the Dong Son culture in early Southeast Asia. It dates to the Han period (ca 200 bc). The very fine quillons that are often missing on pieces of this type are present and intact, making this a truly rare and high quality find. It measures 31.5 cm in length and weighs 371 grams. It appears to have a repair to the very tip, which is not uncommon for these daggers.

This is a scramasax, or long knife, from the Viking culture. It dates to roughly 900 AD. The scramasax style of knife was common to a broad time period which we can narrow down based on the provenance of the piece. This piece wasfound in the banks of the River Cock outside the city of York in the 1950’s. York is the location of what was once one of the most important of Viking cities and several Viking encampments and villages were located along nearby rivers. This scramasax was recovered alon ...click for details

This is an early Viking sword dating to circa 900 AD. It has a bronze, five-lobe, two-stage pommel and a thin tang. The guard is boat-shaped and made of iron. The blade is unfullered. The letter “T” is chiseled into the blade just below the guard. The letter “T” on the blade may be a reference to Tyr, the Viking God of War. It is also possible that the “T” may represent the Viking God Thor or it may even be a reference to the Christian cross. Even though it was not until roughly the 12th ce ...click for details

This is a large, hammered bronze offering vessel from the Yunnan Province in China. It likely dates to the Song Dynasty (906-1279 AD). For a nearly identical example see “Offering Vessels of Yunnan” by Michael C. Teller, TK Asian Antiquities 2004, p. 53. These mysterious vessels were apparently used for making votive offerings and have been found containing items such as shells, paper, and personal artifacts etc. This particular example is relatively large compared to other known examples. ...click for details

This is an iron sword and sheath from the Celtic culture. The name “Celtic” was a term applied to the ‘barbarian’ tribes of Europe that constantly threatened the more civilized Mediterranean world. Members of various Celtic tribes likely never referred to themselves by any name other than their tribal name and probably never even considered themselves part of a larger European culture. Celtic culture is divided into two main archaeological periods. Each named after the geographical site where ...click for details
