| 1800s turned wood mortar and pestle of highly figured lignum vitae or heartwood as it is also known. Lignum Vitae is a rock hard and incredibly dense wood making it ideal for early items of utility such as this set. This piece purchased from a Maui estate is 7" x 5 1/2" at neck. Pestle about 8 1/2". This item weighs shy 5 lbs. Beautiful and functional in the kitchen. An heirloom investment you can use and enjoy fearlessly. Lignum Vitae meaning Wood of Life it's resin is believed to have curative properties. A tea has been made of the chips. Apparently useful as a general restorative among other affects.
