Tortoise Shell Earrings Victorian Amphora Urn Shape
Fine Victorian tortoise shell earrings circa 1870, pressed in the form of an urn. The measure 2 5/8" long not including the wires so they are a good-sized. These have replacement goldfilled lever-back clasps for pierced ears and could be exchanged for shepherds hooks or screwback style easily. Tortoise is a thermoplastic, that is to say, it melts when heated, therefore can be molded into forms such as these earrings, bracelets, brooches and hair ornaments. Cigarette and card cases were also created from this now protected material. Since this kind of jewelry will never be created again, tortoise will no doubt continue to appreciate in value. These earrings are referenced in Warman's Jewelry by Christie Romero (pp54) and are valued at $750.
