Lawrence Saufkie Bracelet Hopi Master Silver Overlay
Lawrence Saufkie Bracelet, a Hopi cuff in the silver overlay technique with oxidized and hand incised ground. This is an older piece that measures 6" end to end plus an additional 1 1/4" gap thats adjustable. This cuff is 1" wide and weighs 51gr. It has no damage and very little visible wear. Pattern of renewal and steps of change and direction are beautifully balanced. Lawrence Saufkie began silver working in 1947, according to author Margaret Wright, he is among the most collected Hopi Smiths and he and his wife Griselda, a basket weaver, were both named as Arizona Living Treasures in 1998. Lawrence Saufkie learned smithing from his papa, Paul Saufkie, who began the silver overlay technique with another master smith, Fred Kabotie. Due to failing eyesight, Mr. Saufkie's family has taken over creating his designs of late. Note: In later years of his production, his last name was added to the bear hallmark, this according to biographer, Barton Wright.
