| Antique Thai rustic wood stupa. 42 1/2 inch tall. This was some Thai Buddhist's ashes final resting place, from over 100 years ago. After death the Thai Buddhists have up to a week of rituals that culminate with a funeral pyre to cremate the dead. Depending on the individuals they might build a stupa to house the ashes and bone fragments "forever". This is an actual old stupa from days gone by. Until about 80 years ago the villagers would carve them out of wood like this one and bury the bases in the dirt at the temple (wat). This would last in some state for around 100 years, when the bases rot off and they fall over or they are deemed an eye sore. The monks then burn them as trash or sell them as ornaments, as they did this one. Now beautifully mounted on a black steel stand as a home decor item, where you can feel the ages, as a monument to the past. Circa 1800s | ||
