What impresses me the most about these shallow dishes is that although provincial and quite basic they are finely potted, way ahead of the capabilities of the western world in those days. Both dishes have a brown glazed interior that stops short of the unglazed rim, in good condition with no chips or cracks. One with fascinating colouration, a combination of silt and rust, gained from ironwork aboard ship. It has small amounts of encrustation to the exterior rim. We have selected this interesting group of seven pieces comprising of; swattow enamelled bowl: Circular bowl with a slightly flared side. Painted in yellow, green and iron red on a white ground with a band of aster half flower heads, alternating with a trellis design above a band of lotus petals. This lovely Victorian ink stand depicts a six point stag on a naturalistic base mounted on to a decorative base with four splayed feet decorated with fierce male faces, two removable lidded glass inkwells. The silver plating shows signs of wear but does not detract from the utter charm of the piece. The six matching point stag quill stand compliments this nice set.
