This is an extremely rare piece from the Tek Sing Cargo. It is beautifully moulded, the body is unglazed with a blue glazed bib on the front. He is holding a pair of straps in each hand, his head is shaved with two plates either side. The actual purpose of these little characters has baffled the experts, perhaps they were for good luck. This attractive little piece was to be used for sake of wine. It is decorated with flowers and blossom. A little nibbled around the rim but most of this cargo was, sometimes when they got to Europe they were mounted in silver. Height: 4cm 1 1/2 ". Delicatily painted with an island pavilion and distent boats within a panelled border of moths and foliage, the rim with the trellis border enclosing flower sprays, the reverse depicting stylised bamboo. This Lovely Cobalt Blue transitional period stem cup was made at the end of Ming, beginning of the Quing Dynasty. These cups would have been made for Export to South East Asia and were sold to the Christies sale 'The Hatcher Cargo' March 1984.
