The subject is absolutely typical of Emily Stannard, the depiction of the game birds shows great still.
The painting was given to 'W.H Bayfield around 1845 by Emily Stannard. I acquired it from an ancestor of the said W.H Bayfield.

This good quality oil painting on canvas comes from an Estate near Nottingham. The gentleman I purchased it
from was born in the farmhouse shown and the figures are his ancestors.

This is a fine portrait of a heavy Bay hunter, clipped and ready.
This gelding is about 16.3hh the eyes have the look of kindness. Not the prettiest head in the world, but look at his build, he would hunt all day, even in the heaviest of plough, probably not at the front but what staying power.
In its original gilt and ivory frame. Signed lower right Gerald Hare.

This quality oil painting on board depicts a light bay hunter gelding in a stable with its bridal waiting to
be tacked up in readiness for a day’s hunting.
He has been fully clipped with a hogged mane, only the legs have been left to protect against mud etc.
A white blaze and three white socks about 16.3 hands high.
This artist certainly knew how to paint horses. I have a Lionel Edwards horse painting and the similarity
is quite remarkable.
