| This is a very fine example by Edward Robert Smythe during an artists active life thei work varies due to pressure to produce more work or indeed their mood at the time. Whatever to my mind, this is one of the best Edward Smythes that I have come across, I bought it in 1972 and it has hung in the library so not to be in any direct sunlight. This lovely scene depicts a young fisherman mending his nets beside a basket of freshly caught Plaice. There are baskets, ropes and nets everywhere. The boys dog is patiently waiting for his master to finish working so they can play. On the shore the horses have just pulled the fishing boats onto the sand. There are many other boats at work out to sea. Seagulls are circling around trying to spot a tasty morsel from the women sorting the fish beside the boats. The painting is in good condition, having been relined just before I bought it in 1972 when a good quality Gilt and Gesso frame was fitted and a brass plaque with E.R Smythe 1810-1899. I really like this painting because there is lots going on, Infact the more one looks the more one sees! A true Gem by this famous East Anglian artist.
