| FROM A SAN FRANCISCO ESTATE, A FINE JAPANESE GILT AND BLACK LACQUER WRITING AND DOCUMENT BOX. LATE MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY. The exterior decorated with scrolling vines, flowers and foliage surrounding a repeat motif of the three-leaf Yamanouchi family kamon. The unattached lid lifts to reveal a removable gilt-edged tray covering a document storage compartment beneath. The narrow front drawer contains a suzuribako with a small, fitted gilt edged inkstone and a gilt metal water dropper (suiteki). The elegantly proportioned box is characterized by fine detailing: the corners are gently rounded and the lid subtly domed with a very fine beaded edge; the underside of the lid is decorated with a pair of phoenix carrying flowering branches; and the gilt surface decoration is extremely refined continuing uninterrupted over the lid, sides and drawer face. The inside lip and rim are edged in gold. The shallow drawer has a removable liner with a recess for the fine inkstone and a matching gilt metal receptacle for the tiny water dropper. In seven pieces: box, lid, tray, drawer, liner with receptacle, inkstone and water dropper. In fine condition with only minimal wear, rubbing and minor retouching. Dimensions: approximately 20cm (h) x 26cm x 20cm (8” x 10” x 7-5/8”) and weighing 1 kg 401 grams (3 lbs 1.4 ounces). ADDITIONAL DETAILED PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. | ||
