| A LARGE YANGSHAO PAINTED EARTHENWARE FUNERARY JAR (circa 2300-2000 BC). From Gansu Province in northwest China, a large funerary food storage jar of Machang type, Majiayao culture pottery. This is a typical large earthenware burial jar of bulbous form with attached handles and tapering severely towards the foot. The surface is decorated with characteristic black and red (purplish-brown) pigment on a buff ground. A surprising number of these early jars have survived simple earth burial. Later and more sophisticated tomb structures were prone to collapse subsequently damaging pottery artifacts. A fine example of Chinese Neolithic pottery, the jar shows wear, fading to pigment, abrasions, adhesions, scratches, frits and small chips, most noticeably around the mouthrim but no major losses of any sort. The handles are intact and an inspection with uv light revealed no restorations or reattachments. Approximate Dimensions & Weight: 15-1/4” high; 5-1/2” diameter of mouthrim; 4-1/4” diameter at base; circumference at widest area (just above loop handles) is 47”. [38.5cm x 14cm x 10.5cm]. Weight is approximately 8 lbs. Maximum EMS Shipping Size for this item: 21" X 21" x 24" (h). Shipping Weight: 10 lbs. Insured EMS shipping to China is $85.00.
