Very nice pair of brass candlesticks, probably from an altar or church set, each with 3 paw feet. The bases are pierced with gothic designs; the columns are twisted in baroque style; the drip cups are also pierced brass. The middle of each column is decorated with an outcropping and attached floret. Height is 18.5" with a triangular base of 7" to each side. A very subtle bas relief in copper of a nude woman with her wrists in shackles and chains attached to a round hook above. At the base of the copper edge is a trademark and the name Plasto. The frame is ebonized wood with a gesso edge and green marbleized plastic border. Size of frame is 7" x 14" x 1.5"
Antique wood and gesso religious statue with original paint of the virgin and martyr, Saint Barbara. With one hand she holds a tower that looks like a lighthouse; with the other she covers her heart. Her long hair and vestments have the movement of baroque statuary. The whole statue is 35" tall; the base is 9" wide and 6" deep. A very large page, made of vellum or sheepskin, from an antiphonale or choirbook used for the Gregorian chant at the Divine Office in a cathedral or monastery. The 5 line musical staff in red and the large, square neums or notes in black date it to sometime in the 16th or 17th century. Small, but beautifully painted Russian icon on wood depicting several male saints standing barefoot on clouds and wearing biblical period clothing, probably apostles. The 3 bearded half-saints above wear the vestments of a bishop or metropolitan. The rich colors of the clothing stand out beautfully against the gilt halos and background. Spelter figure with a bronze patina of a Greek or Roman bearded archer seated on a very stylish chair. He holds a bow on one side; arrows are in the quiver at his feet. Very fine 19th century gilt bronze statue of Pope Saint Gregory I also called the Great. This majestic figure wears a fringed cope and the triple crowned papal tara and carries the triple cross crozier. At his feet lies a book. The opening at the base of this reliquary is for a relic long gone. Height is 27" The base is 7" x 7" Condition is excellent. There are no foundry or artist's marks.
