Small bronze statue of Saint Peter seated on a Renaissance see; probably a Grand Tour piece. The original is in the NW corner of the nave of St Peter's Basilica, Rome. Many thought it dated to the 5th century, but recently most agree it is probably of the 13th C. by Arnolfo DiCambio. St Peter holds the keys of the kingdom in his left hand, while blessing with his right. Three gothic-arched wooden panels, probably 19th century, are attached by black metal hinges, forming a classic triptych. Nine carved bone figures, possibly 17th century, represent Christ the King with an open book under a Romanesque arch and several angels and saints in attitudes of prayer and adoration. Gothic hexagonal lampshade made of pages from a 16th century antiphonal in Latin Gregorian chant. Each page is woven with rawhide to the metal frame. There are 3 large decorated initials, one small ornamented letter and some rubrics, in red, of course. The large R begins the Latin antiphon, Refulsit Sol, The Sun shown forth. Each panel is 9" high and 7.5" wide.
18th century continental carved wood statue of Saint Sebastian bound at the wrists to a tree trunk. The wood figure stands on a walnut base and is meant to be hung on a wall. The figure is 6.5" tall; the base 3" tall.
Carved wood figure of a priest or cleric in cassock and surplice holding a book and standing near a font or brazier. The book has two webbed feet on it; unfortunately, the body of the bird or duck is long gone. Condition is good except for the loss of the fowl and the priest's left hand. Pair of adoring angels carved of wood with gesso, polychromed and gilded, probably originally attached to a piece of furniture, altar or tabernacle. Perfect for a creche set, one angel holds his hands in the prayer of adoration; the other has his arms crossed on his breast in the attitude of humility. Nicely carved and stained wood figure of a hunter in late medieval rich hunting clothes and hat with a horn on his belt caressing a deer or stag. Probably early 20th century. Many medieval legends tell of dissolute hunters encountering stags with crucifixes between their horns and after a conversion of life, living as hermits or bishops and then saints. Large polychromed and carved wood figure or statue of a priest or monk wearing a gold cope with a hood and red lining, a white alb and a silver belt, probably from 19th century Latin America. His hair sports the medieval style called the monastic tonsure. The santo is 13" tall with the newer wooden base. The base is 4" wide and 3.5" deep. Condition is good with the loss of his two hands and some of the polychrome.
Polychromed and carved wood figure or statue of a friar wearing the black and white Dominican habit and the monastic tonsure, probably from 19th century Latin America. He holds a red covered book with a gold lined scapular. Possibly the learned Saint Thomas Aquinas or Saint Vincent Ferrer. Condition is good with some loss of polychrome and gesso.
