Carved wood sculpture of a bucolic country scene, probably in Quebec, Canada, of a woman baking bread in an outdoor oven with a dog resting under a bench. Cultivated fields, fences and a church steeple fill in the background. The sides are framed by stylized trees. This Canadian bas relief was sculpted by R. Valliere in 1946. The signature and date are legible in the bottom right and left corners. Size is 18" x 35.5" x 2" Condition is excellent.

19th century polychromed and carved wooden statue of a bishop wearing gilt vestments, a miter and gloves. In his right hand he holds a crozier with what looks like a fleur-de-lys in the crook. In his left hand he holds a book with 2 fish resting on it. The figure could possibly represent Saint Ulrich, bishop of Augsburg, AD 973, who once converted flesh into fish that his people might not break a fast (from Saints and their Symbols by EA Greene, 1911) Condition is excellent with a maker' ...click for details
