Carved and polychromed wood statue of Jesus falling from the weight of the cross on his way to Calvary. Both shoulder and elbow joints are reticulated and can be repositioned. Probably late 19th century from Latin America. Condition is very good with the loss of the left forearm and hand and one of the fingers of the right hand. Also there are two splits in the painted wooden base. Size of base is 11" x 6" Height of figure on base is 12"

A wonderful carved ivory scene depicting the adoration of the Magi or three kings after the birth of Jesus. The child Jesus stands, supported by Mary, on the creche while one of the kings bows low presenting his gift in a covered chalice at the child's feet. The other 2 kings hold gifts in a ciborium on either side. An ass smiles with red lips near the infant and an ox peaks out from behind one of the kings. Beautifully painted oil on artist's board of evergreens and small trees or bushes with mountains in a haze in the distance, signed and dated VA Anderson, 1933. Size with period frame is 14.5" x 11.75" without frame 12" x 9" Condition is excellent except for 3 small white spots in the brances of the tall tree to the right.

Oeuvres du Lacordaire, the Dominican theologian, in French in 9 volumes of full leather with marbled endpapers and marbled edges, published in Paris by Librairie Poussielgue Freres in 1882. Volume 1, Vie de St. Dominique, the Life of Saint Dominic, has a beautiful engraving of the saint by the Blessed Fra Angelico. Bolognese School oil on copper from the 17th century depicting Saint Peter holding the Keys of the Kingdom and Saint Paul a scroll, framed in a heavily-modeled gesso and gilt frame which measures 13" x 15.5" x 2.5" The painting itself is 5.5" x 7.5"

A white metal allegorical figure of a semi-nude man holds a bag of money and a scroll with the words in French: Aidez-vous les uns les autres, Help one another. On the pedestal with the head of a lion are the words: Travail, Economie. Work, money. There are traces of gilt on his nude body. The architectural inkpots on either side of him are missing their ceramic or glass inserts. The black marble base with rich white veining rests on 4 gilt bronze classical style feet. Framed oil on canvas stretched on board signed by Louis Abel-Truchet (1857-1918) with a typed note on the back which gives a brief biography of the artist: Pupil of Jules Lefebrve and Benjamin Constant. He first exhibited in 1891 and from then his work appeared in many exhibitions in France and in many international exhibitions. An early (possibly 16th century) carved plaque or bas relief from Spain depicting the weighing of souls by Saint Michael the Archangel. On Michael's right, an angel places a soul to be judged on the scale; on his left, the devil pulls a soul to hell. Size of wood plaque is 7.25" x 5" Modern frame is 8.5" x 10.75" x 2.25" Condition is excellent.
