| Wonderful and rare tile by H Schaffenacker who established his studio in 1948 in Ulm, Germany. He created many striking ceramic vases and the designs of his tiles/wall plaques vary from the completely abstract to highly stylized figures of horses, people, fish and other forms found in nature. This piece I believe is somewhat rare and is not listed in the Schaffenacker catalog in M.P. Thomas' "Deutsche Keramik". It is however clearly marked and bears the inventory number 577. The highly abstracted (and sexually ambiguous) figure on a bicycle is carved in deep relief. In excellent condition, the piece measures 14 9/16ths x 4 3/8" and is just shy of one inch deep. The workshop signature is impressed on the back and there is a sticker on the front also bearing the Schaffenacker signature. | ||||||||
