This extraordinary oil on canvas painting depicts the Return of the Prodigal Son and dates from the last half of the nineteenth century and has an Italian provenance. The term "prodigal son" has passed into wider usage to mean a son or other dependent who does not live up to the expectations o ...click for details

This appealing oil on canvas Alpine (European) genre painting is likely Swiss, Bavarian or Italian and depicts a lumberyard by a railroad track. The men in the shack look quite businesslike in their dress and demeanor. The painting is signed and dated Fil. (Fic.) Jos. Kern 1928. Canvas size is 23-3/4 x 31-1/4 inches; framed, the painting is 27-3/4 x 35-1/8 inches. It is a little quirky in its portrayal of a slice of life from that time period.
