| These classic sterling silver mint julep cups are larger than average and are an exact copy of a 19th-century Kentucky cup. They have beading on both top and bottom and are 4 inches in height and 3-1/4 inches in diameter at the rim. They weigh approximately 5 troy ounces each. They are stamped Sterling. This cup may be purchased for $250 each, for $1500 for six (half dozen), or for $3000 for a dozen. This is a handsome weighty julep cup. The name “julep cup” is reserved for beakers that were made or sold in the South or in the Border States as a popular drinking vessel for the middle and well-to-do classes and came to be associated with the Southern liquor drink. The phrase “julep cup” didn’t come into use possibly until the 1830s-1840s. The mint julep drink was originally a strong concoction of rum, sugar and water. The julep cup has a great Kentucky association. The popularity of the beaker in Kentucky, where it is regionally called a julep cup, is partially accounted for as a symbol of a time before the Civil War----a time of romantic gentility, relaxed wealth and graciousness, an era when a man’s breeding was reflected in his manners and hospitality. | ||||||||
