| This wonderful signed vintage Haitian spirit flag depicts Ogou, the warrior spirit of justice who appears in the guise of the Catholic Saint James. Dimensions are 30 inches by 31 inches. Haitian spirits or loa are intermediaries between humans and the realm of the spirit. They work magic for people, “mount” or possess their worshippers like horses and “ride” them into the night at special ceremonies. The "veve", or delicate ritual drawings that evoke and invoke the spirits, are drawn into the beadwork of the flag. The voudou ceremony consists of a series of songs and dances accompanied by drums, offered in honor of the loa. Through possession, both the loa and the community are affirmed. The people transcend their materiality by becoming spirits, and the spirits renew their vigor by dancing and feasting with the people. During possession, loa enter the body of the priest (ougan) or priestess (mambo) to communicate with the people, and answer pressing questions. Voudou’s liturgical calendar parallels the Roman Catholic one, but rituals can be held at most times of the year. Haiti’s recent 1987 constitution recognizes freedom of religion and Voudou as the national religion of the Haitian people. | ||||||
