| Emil John Hess (American, b. 1913-d. 2003)painted this wonderful Modernist pen, ink & watercolor mixed media depiction of a horse race. Well known for genre scenes of New York City, where he lived and worked primarily, Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey circus, off track betting parlors, famous race horses and modern metal sculpture. Hess studied at Duquesne University 1938-1939, Art Institute of Pittburgh 1946-1949, Brooklyn Museum Art School 1950-1951, and New York University 1959. Hess signed the painting lower right EJ Hess. Dimensions are 11-1/2 x 8 inches, sight size, and 13-2/3 x 20-1/4 inches framed. He has exhibited at NAD, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in traveling exhibitions with Museum of Modern Art. He was a life member of the Art Students League, American Federation of Arts, and the International Platform Association. His work is held by the Smithsonian Institution, the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg, Earl Ludgins College in Chicago, Eliah Root College in New York, and the Phillip Johnson Collection, NYC.
