Exceptional Japanese Mingei stoneware vase by Shoji Hamada student Murata Gen (1904-?), circa 1960s, offered in excellent condition. This vase measures approximately 6" high by 6" wide. It is signed with a chop, and bears the mark of the Herbert Wade Hemphill collection ("HWH" plus number). Hemphill was the most important folk art collector in the USA, and a selection from his collection went on a goodwill tour of Japan in the seventies. Large Japanese mingei vase by Hamada student Murata Gen (1904-?), circa 1960s, offered in excellent condition. This vase measures approximately 9" high by 7" wide. It is signed with a chop. From the Herbert Wade Hemphill collection (bears the mark of the collection). Selections from the collection traveled to Japan in the seventies, and this vase and the other by Murata offered on this site were probably acquired at that time.
