MURATA GEN, EXCEPTIONAL VASE, MASHIKO, CIRCA 1960S
Exceptional Japanese Mingei stoneware vase by Shoji Hamada student Murata Gen (1904-?), circa 1960s, offered in excellent condition. This vase measures approximately 6" high by 6" wide. It is signed with a chop, and bears the mark of the Herbert Wade Hemphill collection ("HWH" plus number). Hemphill was the most important folk art collector in the USA, and a selection from his collection went on a goodwill tour of Japan in the seventies. This vase and the other Murata vase offered on this site were probably acquired at that time.
