ERIC (ERICH) GODAL, ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR, 1940s
Original watercolor by Eric Godal (aka Erich Godal, Erich Goldmann), a German artist born in Berlin in 1899 who died in Hamburg in 1969. Painting in excellent framed condition, signed l.r. "Eric Godal", 16" by 11" painting alone--from a Florida estate. One of two works by this artist currently available. Eric (Erich) Godal was a German painter, illustrator, graphic artist, political cartoonist, and caricaturist who contributed to Simplicissimus before Hitler's ascent to power. He left Germany for Prague in 1933 where he contributed to Simplicus/ Der Simpl until he left Europe for New York in 1935. In the United States he worked for a number of magazines including Collier's, and also taught, creating politically charged cartoons and erotic graphic works and illustrations. Godal returned to Germany in 1954. Well listed, exhibited (both in Berlin and New York), and collected artist, with auction records up to 35,000 euros for an oil on carton titled: "Anmache" im Tanzcafe--Berliner Milieu Studie".
