William de Morgan Arts and Crafts tile c. 1888

Antique William de Morgan Arts and Crafts tile in the ‘Single Rose’ (wild rose) pattern. The design consists of a hand painted large pink rose and delicate leaves, along with a wavy ‘worm’ line to the background, made circa 1888. The tile measures approximately 6 inches square and has the impressed Merton Abbey mark to the back. The tile has a chip to both bottom corners, the chip to the right is where the glaze has separated from the clay body. Please see page 195, fig 13 of the book ‘The Designs of William De Morgan’ by Dennis and Wiltshire for an illustration of the original William De Morgan tracing paper drawing for this design. The illustration of the design includes the ‘worm’, ‘eye’ to the flower’s centre and row of varying length lines not seen in most of these tiles. See page 100 of the book ‘William De Morgan Tiles‘ by Jon Catleugh for two different variations of this design, these are without the ‘worm’, ‘eye’ and lines. We are happy to ship worldwide. Please email if you have any questions.
