This is a superb ink and color portrait on silk of Soson Taesa,as he was usually known in Korea,who was one of the most important Zen Masters in Korean history who lived in the 16thC and was probably the most important Monk of the Choson Dynasty.The two poems on the painting were written by two admiring desciples of Ch'ongho Hyujong,their names were Dae-Jun and Ham-Myung Dae-Kwang. Modelled in a recumbent position,resting upon gilded hooves with head raised and black enameled eyes looking straight ahead, its mouth slightly opened and showing an attached back cover that when lifted shows a vibrant turquoise colored enameled interior.
