ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 4 1/2" x 15 1/2", 11 cm x 39.5 cm What a wonderful find. This is a farmer's shin guard: it would have been wrapped around the lower leg for protection from the harsh underbrush. In this case, this particular beauty is heavily embellished with a beauiful, repeat pattern of the persimmon flower motif, a common one in Japan. What's nice about this is that the sashiko stitching is done in a thick, blue cotton thread against a gr ...click for details

sold

ca. mid twentieth century 29" x 16", 74 cm x 41 cm It is impossible to describe how much very tight stitching is sewn on these work pants: the stitching to the proper fronts of these trousers is done in such dense fields that it reads more as texture than hand stitching. Please take a careful look at the detail photos where we tried to capture this amazingly labor intensive detail. Of patched and repurposed indigo dyed cloth, these tabbled work pants, called tattsuke or momo ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 47" x 46", 119.5 cm x 117 cm If a boro long work coat, or nagagi, could be considered 'classically beautiful', this one is just that. Beautifully patched and mended all over, this is made of gorgeous hand woven, indigo dyed cotton. The stitches used to mend and to apply patches are wonderfully eccentric and carries forth a feeling of immediacy. There is a lovely, unintended balance to the application of the patches, front a ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth century 57" x 48", 145 cm x 122 cm This is the first katsugi, or kimono-shaped veil we have offered on this site. Worn by upper class, samurai women--and by brides--this lightweight, hand painted silk garment would be draped over the head of a woman as she goes out in public or to a private ceremony such as a wedding or a funeral. Note unusual construction of the piece: there is extra material from the top of the collar to the 'shoulder' line: this l ...click for details

ca. early to mid twentieth century 46" x 46", 117 cm x 117 cm This work kimono is so loaded with desirable attributes that it is difficult to know where to begin enumerating them. First, the most unusual--and this is the first time we have ever seen this--is a lining made with antique cotton flour sacks manufactured in the state or Oregon in the United States. The writing on the bags reads "Manufactured by The Portland Flouring Mills Co., Portland Oregon" and "Bye ...click for details

ca. early twentieth century 27" x 32 1/2", 68.5 cm x 81.5 cm Absolutely charming, this is a mini nagagi, or long coat, made for a child, most likely from repurposed cloth, probably from the child's parents' cast-off clothing. Beautifully faded, this indigo dyed striped cotton kimono shows some repairs to the sleeves (see detail photos) and has a lovely, long silk tie. The interior is fitted with faded indigo cotton linings.

ca. mid to late nineteent century 10 1/2" x 15", 26.5 cm x 38 cm This intensely pieced beauty owes its allure to the gorgeous Edo period (1603-1867) silks--all dyed using botanical dyes--that are expertly stitched together on a diagonal. Pay special attention to very small runs of pieced cloth that are used to fill one small square area: quite amazingly detailed stitchery went into this silk-lined, drawstsring bag. The cloth of course is recycled from garments. This bag, being a ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth/ early twentieth century 34 1/2" x 32", 88 cm x 81.5 cm This very smart little child's kimono is made of tsumugi, or a kind of raw silk which is dyed a rich, medium tone grey. It is in pristine condition. The repeat pattern seen on this small kimono is hand applied to the cloth using a hand cut stencil, in a method called surikomi: the pattern is a repeat of hemp leaves and some kind of wildflower. The curious stitch up the back of the garment is done in ...click for details

ca. early to mid twentieth century 33" x 46", 84 cm x 117 cm This is a wonderfully rural piece, a gorgeous collage of mainly home spun, hand woven cotton textiles, the botton being very heavily over-patched. Aside from the visual beauty of this sarong-like under kimono--a kind of 'half-slip'--is that it comes to us from a collection of Japanese textiles collected in the early 1990s, the collector was a textile researcher. Therfore we know this koshimaki was made in Akita ...click for details
