ca. mid twentieth century as shown: 14 1/4" x 9", 36.26 cm x 23 cm This is an amazingly beautiful--almost mesmerizing--small cotton bag hand stitched in West Bengal, India, using a stitching method called kantha. Kantha stitching has its roots in ingenuity and the culture of women: used white dhotis (men's sarongs) and women's sarees were salvaged, cut and layered: thread from the colored, embroidered borders of the used garments were pulled free from the rags and used as ...click for details

$185.00

ca. early to mid twentieth century 50" x 50", 127 cm x 127 cm This is a very handsome everyday textile from old Japan. It is a good-sized, indigo dyed cotton boro furoshiki or traditional wrapping cloth. It is hand stitched from four panels of cotton; two of the four corners are stencil resist dyed showing kanji, or Chinese characters. What gives this furoshiki its appeal is the placement of 8 cotton patches in the center of the cloth, the contrast of value and color with th ...click for details

The cotton drawstring seems original to the bag; there is a trace of machine stitching on one of the bag's pieces of recycled cotton. This kind of piece-constructed, drawstring bag is often referred to as a komebukuro. Komebukuro are bags that were used to bring token offerings of uncooked ...click for details

$245.00

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 34" x 48", 86.5 cm x 122 cm This is a marvelous old boro hemp hanten that is shown inside-out in order to display its many patches, its deep patina and its wonderful stitching. This jacket is well-used, as is quite obvious. To describe its color is difficult: it is a kind of medium-range grey blue; the hemp cloth itself is woven of exceedingly narrow stripes which gives a misty appearance to the neutral color. As with most hemp cl ...click for details

ca. mid twentieth century 35" x 25", 89 cm x 63.5 cm It is interesting that whoever created this sitting mat did so out of some very precious pieces of cotton cloth. The face of the mat is made from a beautiful shibori cotton, one that it is beautifully murky in its sapphire tones and shows two, layered shibori techniques, one on top of the other, which produce an undulating, water surface effect. Note the elongated oval repair to the center, right of the cloth, the patch being ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 8" x 8" x 8", 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm This is the kind of komebukuro, or festival rice bag, that you dream of finding. It is a simply stunning example of this kind of small, drawstring bag that was used to carry offerings of dried rice or beans to temple and shrine festivals in old Japan. It is made of hemp cloth--about 18 pieces in all--and the eye catching beauty of this bag is its symmetrical construction, its fine condition, ...click for details

ca. mid to late nineteenth century 56" x 13", 142 cm x 33 cm This length of thickly woven hemp cloth is meant for a connoisseur of this kind of rustic katazome cloth: it is always wonderful to find a length of resist dyed figured cloth such as this which is woven from hemp, and has age. The indigo dye has gracefully faded, both from exposure to light and from wear: there is a decided surface patina which indicates this, and which, we think, adds to the beauty of this cloth. ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 37" x 13", 94 cm x 33 cm Tsunobukuro, or so-called horn bags, are traditionally configured and sewn from one piece of cloth, usually some form of asa or bast fiber cloth. It is rather unusual that this lovely example, shown here, is hand stitched from a length of green dyed hemp kaya, or mosquito netting. Unlike some mosquito netting that is a fragile hemp mesh cloth, this kaya is quite sturdy and of an attractive green color, the ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 56" x 54", 142 cm x 137 cm A furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth: some furoshiki are used in a genteel manner to offer a gift to a friend and are delicate in design, while others are made for hard work, to haul bundles or to store things. This hand loomed cotton, large, four panel furoshiki falls into the second category. It was mean to be a work horse--but it is a handsome one at that, what with the lovely indigo and ...click for details
