ca. mid Twentieth century 24" x 26 1/2", 62 cm x 67 cm A wonderfully vibrant child's kimono, padded and made of cotton. During Japan's Edo period, (1603-1868), Indian export cloth called sarasa was heavily collected by those who could afford this extravagance: its allure was due to its exoticism as well as the marvelous and ingenious techniques used to create pattern and color--very much admired by the Japanese, who to this day are fascinated by sarasa. The cloth on this ...click for details

72" x 62", 183 cm x 157 cm This is a tough, old boro piece, and beautiful because of it. Made of a blue-green cotton gauze (presumably overdyed indigo), this five panel mosquito netting, or kaya, shows a lifetime of use and wear. Many wonderfully-placed patches are stitched to the surface of the piece to repair holes, while there are other surface losses overall. Very soft in the hand and of a clingy cotton, this large, boro kaya has had its day at work and has now set out to be ...click for details

ca. early to mid Twentieth century 32" x 30", 81 cm x 76 cm This is a beautiful child's cotton kimono, lavishly hand painted: the blue of the kimono is the clear, open sky which is studded with twenty-three soaring cranes: each one white with a scarlet cap of feathers. The hemline is painted very elaborately with a winding brook, a picturesque pine tree surrounded by bamboo, and soft mountains in the distance. The pine and crane are both traditional symbols of long life, and th ...click for details

ca. early Twentieth century 51" x 45", 129.5 cm x 114.5 cm During Japan's Meiji Era, cotton flannel was introduced to Japan and became something of an 'exotic' fabric during that epoch. Often you can see cotton flannel remnants recycled and used to reinforce the collars of juban (undergarments) or noragi (work coats); sometimes you see the occasional flannel (or in Japanese neru) patch on a boro futon cover. This is a wonderfully odd garment, composed entirely of cot ...click for details

ca. early to mid Twentieth century 72" x 58", 183 cm x 147.5 cm Stunningly subtle, this intact futon cover is woven from the leftover thread from many different spools which have been knotted together to form one long filament of multi-colored thread, hence the irregular and intermittent progression of color and stripe up and down the panels that comprise this futon cover. Zanshi is the term for this homespun cloth made of leftover thread, and it speaks so much of the frugal nat ...click for details

ca. early to mid Twentieth century 35" x 54", 89 cm x 137 cm Constructed of four panels of intensely inky-dark indigo dyed cotton, this noren, or door covering, shows an graphically placed kanji (Chinese character) enclosed in a thick white circle. The white of the resist-dyed kanji is yellowed from age, however the cotton is in fine condition and the indigo dyed cloth is spectacularly dense in color. Note the nine, lighter blue tabs on top, each attached using a wonderful 'X&# ...click for details

ca. early Twentieth century 90" x 3", 228 cm x 7.5 cm This is a thickly woven hand spun cotton length, probably a kind of accessory 'collar' piece, by a pilgrim on his arduous trip paying tribute to each temple on a particular sacred mountain, in this case it is most likely Omine san in Wakayama. The accessory is well-worn and shows the hand-painted bonji characters, a kind of Japanese-style Sanskrit, that more than likely have to do with seed syllables for a 'mantra ...click for details
