ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 38" x 34", 96.5 cm x 86.25 cm This boro noragi or work coat made of repurposed, hand loomed and hand dyed cotton is something of classic example of rural noragi. The quality of the faded, indigo dyed cotton, the hand stitching, the two layers of cloth and the abrasions to the surface of the cloth all add up and make this an archetypal rural Japanese work coat--and a beautiful one, at that. ca. mid nineteenth century 13 1/2" x 17", 34 cm x 43 cm What a lovely, old piece of hand spun, hand loomed, indigo dyed cotton. This piece of hand dyed cloth is a fragment from a late Edo Period (1603-1868) tenugui, a kind of all-purpose cotton towel that was--and is still--used throughout Japan. The hand spun threads are simply beautiful--as is the asagi, or pale blue color, which shows off the hand spun cotton yarn to great advantage.
