SOLD

ca. 1920 66 1/2" x 67", 169 cm x 170 cm An inky-blue, indigo dyed cotton furoshiki (wrapping cloth) dominated by a striking centrally placed white cotton sashiko-stitched 'X' design. The furoshiki is mended with wonderfully placed and colored patches, arranged in free symmetry, punctuated by odd greens and purples, evoking a kind of peculiar harmonics. A wonderful boro textile.

SOLD

ca. 1860 - 1900 39" x 49", 99 cm x 124 cm This is an unusual cotton jacket; the exterior is a very subtle shima (striped) cloth in mustard and brown, the lining is an late Edo period komon (small figure) pattern in grey. What makes this combination of textiles unusual is that the komon patterns were highly prized and pricey when they were being produced ca. 1850, and it is strange that such fancy fabric would be used as a lining. Obviously, at a later date, the maker of this coa ...click for details

ca. 1930 26 3/4" x 18 3/4", 68 cm x 47.5 cm This sodenashi (vest) is a combination of sakiori (a weft of shredded cloth) and sashiko(stitched) patches and gussets. Must likely this vest would have been worn by lumbermen or workers in the forest. Examples such as this may have been made in Fukui Prefecture (see a similar example: Riches from Rags: Saki-ori & Other Recycling Traditions in Japanese Clothing, page 40). This is a rustic work garment, whose thick texture would hav ...click for details

Meiji Era (1868-1912) 48" x 32 1/2", 122 cm x 82.5 cm This beautiful cloth is made of gold-brocade silk and what appears to be a silk mesh interior which is most likely dyed with sappenwood. This mesh material is stiff, and has the same kind of hand as a very fine hemp or ramie (asa) cloth. The gold brocade borders show roundels of phoenixes and dragons interspersed with paulownia flowers and chrysanthemums. I do not have much information on this kind of cloth other than it was mos ...click for details

SOLD

ca. 1880-1900 8" x 3 3/4" x 1 1/4", 20 cm x 9.5 cm x 3 cm This shima-cho, or 'stripe album,' is a sample book comprised of hundreds of small fragments of handwoven cotton fabrics applied within a 'washi' paper book, in this case, this book appears to be a re-used ledger book. A shima-cho was kept by a family in order to remember--and consequently to be able to re-weave--the subtle stripes and checks that were used to create the family's garments and househo ...click for details

ca. 1900-20 32" x 45", 81.5 cm x 144.5 cm This indigo-dyed cotton hanten, or work coat, is very worn, patched and mended in a beautifully yet unselfconsciously artistic fashion. The base of this coat shows rice-paste resist dyed images of stylized kanji or Chinese characters; the patches on the exterior of this coat are hand sewn in free-form design. The interior of this coat shows a lining of 'figured' cloth in beiges and browns, and this lining shows off the wonderfully i ...click for details

ca. 1925-35 69 1/2" x 64", 176.5 cm x 162.5 cm This is a wonderfully large indigo dyed cotton noren composed of five individual panels, machine-stitched together. The tsutsugaki noren shows two 'mon' or family crests of stylized wood sorrel. The running design on the botton of the noren is of stylized well-cribs. The noren is in very fine shape, with some very subtle discoloration on the white areas, with one small blotch of faint blue on the well crib design (pictured). ...click for details

ca. 1890 122" x 13 1/4", 310 cm x 33.5 cm This indigo dyed cotton 'banner' is dyed using the 'tsutsugaki' or freehand rice paste resist technique; the cotton is hand spun and hand loomed, as are the many hand-sewn tabs running along the perimeter of the piece. There are vertically running kanji, or Chinese characters, on this banner. The indigo is inky-dark, the undyed cotton is pure white with some very slight discoloration and staining, almost unnoticeable and in ...click for details

ca. 1920 33" x 49 1/2", 84 cm x 126 cm This is a wide-cut, presumably man's noragi, or work coat, made of very deep indigo-dyed cotton and sashiko stitched in neat, narrow rows throughout the body of the garment. There are dense blocks of veritcal sashiko stitching on the lower back, lower front and should areas, which would have protected the garment against wear. The stitching is done with a kind of deeply colored brown (kaki-shibu dyed?) cotton thread. There is some gentle w ...click for details
