Meiji Era, 1868-1912, 49"/ 124.5 cm x 48"/ 122 cm. This exquisite boro is crafted and mended from a sashiko furoshiki and is layered with patches of indigo dyed homespun cotton, some of which are sashiko stitched. The original furoshiki shows corner motives of kiku (chrysanthemum), asa-no-ha (hemp leaf) and tasuki (crossed cords). This is a remarkably beautiful boro for its quirky placement of sashiko patches against the quite, dark-yet-bright field of indigo blue cotton patches, m ...click for details

Late Meiji/ Early Taisho, c. 1915, 42 12"/ 108 cm shoulder to hem x 47 1/2"/ 121 cm sleeve tip to sleeve tip. This is a wonderful example of a 'boro' or ragged, patched and mended farmer's kimono. It is at least four layers thick (see detail photos) and weighs as much as a rug. This kimono, being made from cast-off and recycled fabric is impossible to date, however it is clear that most of the fabric dates from the Meiji Era, however some of the large-repeat 'kasuri& ...click for details

Meiji Era (1868-1912), 55"/ 140 cm high x 60" x 153 cm wide. This 'boro' textile is a superb example of the patched, mended and reinforced futon covers of old Japan. In this piece we see a veritable blizzard of 'shima'--or hand loomed striped fabric--most of which are laid out in vertical format, creating a stunning visual insistency. Occasionally there is a bit of 'kasuri' ikat indigo amidst the strong flurry of striping. The lower left corner literally han ...click for details

late Taisho-early Showa Period, c. 1930, Length, shoulder to bottom hem: 50 1/4"/ 128 cm, Width, tip of sleeve to tip of sleeve: 46 1/2" / 118 cm No doubt this kimono began its life a simpler garment than it appears today.
