This is the first katsugi, or kimono-shaped veil we have offered on this site. Worn by upper class, samurai women--and by brides--this lightweight, hand painted silk garment would be draped over the head of a woman as she goes out in public or to a private ceremony such as a wedding or a funeral.

This is an half under-kimono, han juban, made primarily of hand sewn pieces of chirimen, or crepe, silk, over forty pieces joined together. This color combination of orange and purple is a common one for garments of this sort which are made from scraps of old clothing. This is as rustic and rural a garment as you can find. It has the beautiful patina of age and the materials used to make this piece are all hand made. The body of the piece is a very unusual material: it is indigo dyed hemp mesh, most likely it was intended to be used as kaya, or mosquito netting.
