$465.00

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 47" x 46", 119.5 cm x 117 cm If a boro long work coat, or nagagi, could be considered 'classically beautiful', this one is just that. Beautifully patched and mended all over, this is made of gorgeous hand woven, indigo dyed cotton. The stitches used to mend and to apply patches are wonderfully eccentric and carries forth a feeling of immediacy. There is a lovely, unintended balance to the application of the patches, front a ...click for details

$285.00

ca. late nineteenth century 57" x 48", 145 cm x 122 cm This is the first katsugi, or kimono-shaped veil we have offered on this site. Worn by upper class, samurai women--and by brides--this lightweight, hand painted silk garment would be draped over the head of a woman as she goes out in public or to a private ceremony such as a wedding or a funeral. Note unusual construction of the piece: there is extra material from the top of the collar to the 'shoulder' line: this l ...click for details

$245.00

ca. mid to late nineteent century 10 1/2" x 15", 26.5 cm x 38 cm This intensely pieced beauty owes its allure to the gorgeous Edo period (1603-1867) silks--all dyed using botanical dyes--that are expertly stitched together on a diagonal. Pay special attention to very small runs of pieced cloth that are used to fill one small square area: quite amazingly detailed stitchery went into this silk-lined, drawstsring bag. The cloth of course is recycled from garments. This bag, being a ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth/ early twentieth century 34 1/2" x 32", 88 cm x 81.5 cm This very smart little child's kimono is made of tsumugi, or a kind of raw silk which is dyed a rich, medium tone grey. It is in pristine condition. The repeat pattern seen on this small kimono is hand applied to the cloth using a hand cut stencil, in a method called surikomi: the pattern is a repeat of hemp leaves and some kind of wildflower. The curious stitch up the back of the garment is done in ...click for details

ca. mid to late nineteenth century 25" x 48", 63.5 cm x 122 cm This is an half under-kimono, han juban, made primarily of hand sewn pieces of chirimen, or crepe, silk, over forty pieces joined together. This color combination of orange and purple is a common one for garments of this sort which are made from scraps of old clothing. ca. late nineteenth early twentieth century 52 1/2" x 39", 133 cm x 99 cm The five white kanji, or Chinese characters, which dominate this indigo dyed cotton noren, or door covering are done using a paste resist technique: rice paste is applied to the undyed cotton and the paste is rendered to resemble kanji. The cloth is dyed in indigo and the pasted areas resist the indigo, giving us these beautiful calligraphic forms. Fabulously weathered and faded due to exposure to the elem ...click for details

$285.00

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 20" x 39 1/2", 51 cm x 105 cm This is as rustic and rural a garment as you can find. It has the beautiful patina of age and the materials used to make this piece are all hand made. The body of the piece is a very unusual material: it is indigo dyed hemp mesh, most likely it was intended to be used as kaya, or mosquito netting. As it is used here, it was probably used in the summer to catch sweat or to keep the outer garment separated fro ...click for details

This hand loomed cotton jacket is decorated with an intensely intricate katazome, or stencil resist pattern: one can only dream about the minutely perforated, hand cut stencil which was used to resist indigo dye from the white cotton in order to produce this wonderful pattern.
