ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 78" x 12 1/2", 198 cm x 32 cm This extremely handsome nobori: it is a banner that would have been flown outside of someone's home on a ceremonial occasion; this banner, or nobori, may once have been taller and may have been cut down to this size. Traditionally, banners are flown for various purposes in Japan: sometimes at Shinto shrines and always at Boys' Day which falls on 5 May of each year: for Boys' Day, banners are f ...click for details

ca. late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century 8 1/4" x 6", 21 cm x 15 cm Very collectible, a shima cho is a home made book showing small samples of hand woven cloth, many of which were purportedly woven at home by one family. ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 64" x 52", 163 cm x 132 cm This is a free-hand paste resist, or tsutsugaki, futon cover showing a beautifully rendered and very traditionally Japanese celebratory motif, the auspicious noshi or dried abalone. Noshi, being an auspicious symbol, was chosen for this indigo dyed cotton futon cover since it was most likely the part of a wedding trousseau. What is wonderful about this piece is the clarity and the sureness of the drawing, a ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 4 1/2" x 15 1/2", 11 cm x 39.5 cm What a wonderful find. This is a farmer's shin guard: it would have been wrapped around the lower leg for protection from the harsh underbrush. In this case, this particular beauty is heavily embellished with a beauiful, repeat pattern of the persimmon flower motif, a common one in Japan. What's nice about this is that the sashiko stitching is done in a thick, blue cotton thread against a gr ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 47" x 46", 119.5 cm x 117 cm If a boro long work coat, or nagagi, could be considered 'classically beautiful', this one is just that. Beautifully patched and mended all over, this is made of gorgeous hand woven, indigo dyed cotton. The stitches used to mend and to apply patches are wonderfully eccentric and carries forth a feeling of immediacy. There is a lovely, unintended balance to the application of the patches, front a ...click for details

$285.00

ca. late nineteenth century 57" x 48", 145 cm x 122 cm This is the first katsugi, or kimono-shaped veil we have offered on this site. Worn by upper class, samurai women--and by brides--this lightweight, hand painted silk garment would be draped over the head of a woman as she goes out in public or to a private ceremony such as a wedding or a funeral. Note unusual construction of the piece: there is extra material from the top of the collar to the 'shoulder' line: this l ...click for details

ca. mid to late nineteent century 10 1/2" x 15", 26.5 cm x 38 cm This intensely pieced beauty owes its allure to the gorgeous Edo period (1603-1867) silks--all dyed using botanical dyes--that are expertly stitched together on a diagonal. Pay special attention to very small runs of pieced cloth that are used to fill one small square area: quite amazingly detailed stitchery went into this silk-lined, drawstsring bag. The cloth of course is recycled from garments. This bag, being a ...click for details

ca. late nineteenth/ early twentieth century 34 1/2" x 32", 88 cm x 81.5 cm This very smart little child's kimono is made of tsumugi, or a kind of raw silk which is dyed a rich, medium tone grey. It is in pristine condition. The repeat pattern seen on this small kimono is hand applied to the cloth using a hand cut stencil, in a method called surikomi: the pattern is a repeat of hemp leaves and some kind of wildflower.
