ca. mid-to-late nineteenth century
31 3/4" x 41", 81 cm x 104 cm
A simply beautiful indigo dyed asa, or hemp or ramie jacket. Note the subtle and sophisticated koshi, or plaid, done in two very closely colored indigo blues. The warp and weft yarns show a gradient set of lines, which seem to refer to the 'waterfall' stripes popular in the late Edo and Meiji eras.
The feel of the hand-plied, hand woven asa is just gorgeous; the jacket was worn, and there is some slight sur ...click for details

Dense rows of white sashiko stitching to the lower third of this bag are its most alluring feature. The hand spun, hand woven, indigo dyed cotton is a beautiful contrast to the thick band of white sashiko stitching; note how interesting it is that the plaid base cloth is seen through the haze of the dense stitching.
Some repairs and a stain to one side of the bag (see detail photos), the other side of the bag ...click for details

This is an indigo dyed, boro cotton noragi, a farmer's work coat. Shown here are many photos of the coat's interior: on the proper back of the coat are two, large patches, each with very dense rows of sashiko stitching, shown in many detail photos accompanying the main photo of the coat. Note as well the wonderful patching and stitching on both sleeves, also shown in detail photos.

ca. late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century
79" x 62", 200 cm x 157.5 cm
This pieced futon cover made of hand loomed indigo dyed cotton covers a large area--were it bordered with a bit more fabric it could easily be used as a cover on a queen-size bed.
Its geometric 'composition' recalls Modernist paintings and collages from the early part of last century: the totemic quality of the central, dark patch of this piece is really striking.
Striking as well as the beautif ...click for details

ca. late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century
52" x 47 1/2", 132 cm x 121 cm
This very deeply blue indigo dyed futon cover--most likely recombined from a kimono or yukata--shows two very animated crabs amid young bamboo, under a rain of white dots, all dyed in the shibori technique.
The cotton of this piece is very nicely home spun and hand loomed and feels wonderful in the hand. The indigo is dark yet clear; the rendering of the crabs is fantastically good: pay special attention ...click for details
