ca. mid twentieth century 29" x 16", 74 cm x 41 cm It is impossible to describe how much very tight stitching is sewn on these work pants: the stitching to the proper fronts of these trousers is done in such dense fields that it reads more as texture than hand stitching. Please take a careful look at the detail photos where we tried to capture this amazingly labor intensive detail. Of patched and repurposed indigo dyed cloth, these tabbled work pants, called tattsuke or momo ...click for details

ca. early to mid twentieth century 46" x 46", 117 cm x 117 cm This work kimono is so loaded with desirable attributes that it is difficult to know where to begin enumerating them. First, the most unusual--and this is the first time we have ever seen this--is a lining made with antique cotton flour sacks manufactured in the state or Oregon in the United States. The writing on the bags reads "Manufactured by The Portland Flouring Mills Co., Portland Oregon" and "Bye ...click for details

ca. early twentieth century 27" x 32 1/2", 68.5 cm x 81.5 cm Absolutely charming, this is a mini nagagi, or long coat, made for a child, most likely from repurposed cloth, probably from the child's parents' cast-off clothing. Beautifully faded, this indigo dyed striped cotton kimono shows some repairs to the sleeves (see detail photos) and has a lovely, long silk tie. The interior is fitted with faded indigo cotton linings.

ca. early to mid twentieth century 33" x 46", 84 cm x 117 cm This is a wonderfully rural piece, a gorgeous collage of mainly home spun, hand woven cotton textiles, the botton being very heavily over-patched. Aside from the visual beauty of this sarong-like under kimono--a kind of 'half-slip'--is that it comes to us from a collection of Japanese textiles collected in the early 1990s, the collector was a textile researcher. Therfore we know this koshimaki was made in Akita ...click for details

ca. early twentieth century 38" x 41", 96.5 cm x 104 cm Beautifully colored in greys, bone whites and rich indigos, with an extraordinary kasuri (ikat) patterns that include vertical elements of graded width, this child's kimono is woven from cotton and silk. The touch of this hand woven cloth is refined in the hand; the tasteful arrangement of kasuri-dyed threads is extremely elegant: one has to imagine a child wearing this dapper garment to get the full visual effect. $155.00

ca. early to mid twentieth century 29 1/2" x 46", 75 cm x 117 cm This is a cotton under-kimono, kind of like a half-slip that is worn like a sarong. In certain cases this kind of under kimono is referred to as koshimaki. The blue dyed cloth, the base of this boro textile, is probably commerciallly produced (or at least the cotton is powerloomed), and there are ten pieces sewn together to create the area of the koshimaki. Note the flowers (camellias?) which are the repeat pattern ...click for details

$295.00

ca. early to mid twentieth century 52 1/2" x 25", 132 cm x 64 cm This two panel boro is woven from a gorgeous indigo dyed kasuri asa (ikat woven hemp or ramie) fabric, most likely omi jofu, the extremely finely made hemp/ ramie fabrics from Shiga, Japan. The asa cloth is silken to the touch and very lightweight-- and it is beautifully figured with phoenixes, scrolls depicting plovers or chidori, paulownia flowers and abstract cross hatchings. Just gorgeous. Add to that the 12 as ...click for details

$195.00

ca. mid twentieth century 25" x 46", 64 cm x 117 cm This is a white cotton pilgrim's coat which is completely hand sewn. There is a rich flood of hand writing on the back of the coat, the central kanji reading the mantra, or invocation, "nam myoho renge kyo" which can be interpreted to mean "Devotion to the Mystic Law of cause and effect that exists throughout all the sounds and vibrations of the universe"; this mantra is associated with the Nichiren sect of ...click for details

ca. early twentieth century 42" x 37", 107 cm x 94 cm Just a beautiful boro textile. This is an indigo dyed furoshiki, or wrapping cloth, which has been well-used and repaired with 24 patches, one of them being a very lovely katazome patch on the bottom, center. The two opposing corners of the furoshiki are stitched in the chrysanthemum motif, the proper left top corner is stitched in the shape of a kanji, or Chinese character. $495.00

ca. early twentieth century 54" x 52", 137 cm x 132 cm Bold and graphic, this is a really gorgeous, indigo dyed cotton pleated shibori yukata, or unlined, casual kimono. The big, vertical streaks of sapphire rich indigo are a foil to the gound color of a watery version of the same blue. The thick, rustic pleats which created this beautiful pattern were no doubt put into place by hand: on some vertically pleated shibori yukatas, a kind of primitive pleating 'machine' was ...click for details
