| mid to late nineteenth century 31" x 25 1/4", 79 cm x 64 cm This ink and tempera on paper sketch is a drawing for nobori bata, or the long, banner like streamers hung on May 5 in honor of Boy's Day. Nobori bata show images of valiant heroes and strong men; sometimes ancient sages and the protagonists from popular literature are depicted, all these images are used to call on the virtures of masculinity, to honor the boy members of a family. Note the really lovely rendering of the samurai men and women, all in poses that are ironically pastoral yet warlike: certainly they are not threatening but the do show strength of body and character. | ||||||||||||||
