A Hand Painted Boy's Day Banner

ca. mid nineteenth century 153 1/2" x 15 1/2", 390 cm x 39.5 cm This is a very long and very beautifully executed, hand painted nobori bata, or a banner flown to celebrate Boy's Day in Japan, which falls on 5 May. Nobori bata show images of valiant heroes and strong men; sometimes ancient sages and the protagonists from popular literature are depicted, all these images are used to call on the virtures of masculinity, to honor the boy members of a family and to celebrate the boy child's future manhood. What can be seen here are such characters beautifully painted, the design of entire nobori bata wonderfully organized on that long, narrow vertical swath of hand loomed cotton. We have not shown an image of the entire nobori bata extended, instead we have shown it in two halves, the top half which is white, undyed cotton and is stenciled with two family crests, in this case that of water plantain and the diamond/lozenge form. The bottom half is the painted part, very rich and full with image, color and movement. Often these banners were offered to a boy by his maternal grandparents, and they can still be seen flying in front of Japanese homes today.. Beautiful, in fine condition, and highly recommended.
