An Indigo Dyed Cotton Shibori Yukata: Hand Pleated

ca. early twentieth century 54" x 52", 137 cm x 132 cm Bold and graphic, this is a really gorgeous, indigo dyed cotton pleated shibori yukata, or unlined, casual kimono. The big, vertical streaks of sapphire rich indigo are a foil to the gound color of a watery version of the same blue. The thick, rustic pleats which created this beautiful pattern were no doubt put into place by hand: on some vertically pleated shibori yukatas, a kind of primitive pleating 'machine' was used to gather the cloth and to make evenly dyed lines which is not the case with this yukata. Eveness was clearly not the intention of the dyer of this yukata who was going for a more immediate effect. In wonderful condition, this collectible garment can be worn or displayed. No doubt it comes from on of Japan's shibori centers, the neighboring cities of Narumi and Arimatsu, Arimatsu still a locus of shibori production.
